Red Earrings 05:19
Black Brook, that’s place where you go If you really want to kill your girl But it’s not the type of thing You want to print on your brochure But when there’s no cure for the girl And the slightest thing will get her peeved You will sink or swim And she wants you to sleep with the fish Lift up your covers on your blanket of flies And sweet Red Earrings Kills every living thing with her eyes [CH] She wore red earrings (x3) With blood on the ground Uncle Geraldine was good to loan me her truck But she hugged the ragged road to roughly Open the door and all you ever tasted was mucky She ain’t a fan of no frog She won’t dine in no ditch She get ugly and don’t wanna talk I start missing my old lonely self Those visions of harmony Are hard to conjure for me And to get some peace and quite Might wind up the penitentiary [CH] Good lord! It was an August nite We took a drive on down ol’ Hamburger Road Got me so wound up that nite So hot I had to change my stroke Red Earrings on a billboard sign Nearly enough to make me change my mind Guess I don’t have that drawl Guess I really ain’t a killer at all WOO!
2.
Family Car 03:46
Where now, Mom and Dad Where now for the new kids, my brother and me We’ve been on the move since he was five Buckle him in Making sure he’s fine Heat of the sun always magnified On the road in the family car Next stop could be anywhere New friends are sure getting old to me A few clicks and we’re out of sight Chain of command keeping me in line And with every new town Mom and Dad still fight We’re back in the family car And we’re about to take another ride We’re driving away in the family car Losing my way Where am I now? Where now, Mom and Dad Open road is always calling to me I’m just looking for some peace of mine Kickin’ a crab apple down the line And all of the signs you recognize Whenever it rains, it pours And I’m about to get another life We’re driving away in the family car Losing my way Where am I now? And we’re about to take another ride We’re driving away in the family car Losing my way Where am I now? And I’m about to get another life

Moonflower 03:56
Heart shaped leaves No two of a kind These thoughts in my head That bloom in the nite And if she had a little girl A little girl just like her Well, that would be alright [CH] Oh, my moonflower You can’t hide your love You give it plenty of light No, you can’t be afraid She wants to see you fight And never leave her in the cold You gotta show her you care [CH] Oh, my moonflower (x2) She just needs a little proof And you know that she is right Ahhhh
. And even when it’s really rainin’ She’s tryin’ to tell you without saying Oh, I love you my child Oh, my moonflower And if she had a little girl A girl like you, I will adore And I will treat her right

2020, pt. 1 04:14
It was 2020 And the plan is clear to me A vision of a heaven that seems real to me I don’t need to prove you wrong I don’t even need to prove I’m right I just want to see what I’ll realize in hindsight Open the doors to the future Feel the feel and come inside, baby Slow dance to the future Lover, let me feel my love inside The echoes of silence It gets inside my head Once you check the situation You wanna scream instead Become one with the water Tryin’ to shed this skin I’m in Watched it raining on the river For an entire year Primordial lovers They been fighting since way back in time Primordial lovers They are the left and the right They are partners in crime [CH] See the year here before us The symmetry between the lines And it’s the year of the reckoning The ones and zeroes realign It was the year 2020 And you saw everything clearly From the depths of despair All the words come a-flowin’ Like a champagne babbling stream When once it seemed best to forget What you thought you’d seen Rebirth in the summer Stretched out on a hill If you’re wondering if I’ll join ya Well then, you know I will [CH2] Spent all my strength to feel nothing Such a waste of space In changing tides It’s such a beautiful vision To rid the Gods From my skies And do it a little bit slower You know it’s still 50/50 We don’t know how this ends
5.
I’m in the clear From this space I can manifest things with my thoughts (In the summertime) And my dreams of us In the summertime In the summer I live in illusion I own the confusion And I’m willing us into being a thing again In the summer (With her long hair a-flowin’) In the summer (She’s growing it long for me now) In this new age And now we’re back in the seventies You and I and me and you In my mind’s eye You were fire clothed in black In my mind’s eye And I couldn’t sleep last nite Thinkin’ ‘bout what’s in store And even God himself isn’t himself no more In the summer In the summer In the summer (With her long hair a-flowin’) In the summer (She’s growing it long for me now) In the summer (With her long hair a-flowin’ now) In the summer (She’s growing it long for me now) In the summer

Gold River 04:28
We’re gonna shoot a movie in Peru Universal’s got a million buck Hookups on the cocaine for the crew We’re gonna shoot a parable on life Prospector sees a river of gold Arms himself to the teeth To give it all to the poor Cousin up and ramblin’ in the aisle Holy rollin’ and breakin’ down Cuz the devil and his band won’t be denied Gonna build a ‘lil boat for my candle Watch the river push it on down And the lighter with a flicker blaze In the thick of the crowd Take me to the river The legendary rovers of the Gold River Band Take me to the river Cousin starts a-groovin’ in the bandstand Take me to the river The legendary killers of the Gram Parsons fan Take me to the river Cousin start a-groovin’ in the bandstand I guess that we could never let it go Feel the gold between our hands And watch the river flow We’re gonna build our castles in the sand Down by the golden strand The place we found our Golden River Band We’re gonna build a luxury liner Duck that sucker down to Brazil, I suppose Let the country and the samba fuse On our little banjoes [CH] Take me to the river [etc.]
7.
Slob 04:10
My babe, I can’t deny his taste But my God! I live with a slob He just eats and sleeps And never leaves his seat He needs a J.O.B. He needs a job [CH1] Son of Lillian and Stan From the state of Alabama That’s when my life, you could say, it went south He don’t read, he don’t write But he loves me right at night Chain smokin’ babe And I live with a slob And my old man He never had no plan Pour that cool, cool wort in the garage As thick as cement He’d mash and he’d ferment And he was just like Y.O.U. He never cleaned up [CH2] Just a freeloadin’ man who could never lend a hand Never saw a dish that he wanted to wash Amplifier pilot light Keeps me up at night Sings his white man blues And I live with a slob Who is this man? Just a freeloadin’ man (repeat) I live with a slob [etc.] Who is this man? I live with a slob (etc.)

Come all ye bitches, it’s a celebration I’m gonna party like I’m on vacation In 1999 (party!) Got this groove on lockdown Just like that guy who flew too close to the sun Felt it was time to do my own Black Album And you just can’t stop me now I’m flying I’m watchin’ little Nikki grindin’ They say, “Gay, act your age!” (No way!) I had a bubble bath with my pants on today (CH) Hey girl, just your kiss Could turn this frog into Prince Hip hooray, my parade The coming out of this Gay If I could be Prince [repeat] I held a sĂ©ance for the prince of darkness And this song was part of the deal Rising up through the air, Darling Nikki It was my anger and my bitterness Come here, ye bitches It’s a time for dancing Summon up the purple Get a taste of the action ‘Cuz you just can’t stop me now I’m fine (Oh yeah, he’s fine, he’s fine, he’s totally fine) You try to funk me but I still get down Got this groove on lockdown They’re never building a wall between us [x2]; [CH, repeat]

Home Truth 04:34
I might be driving nowhere Way past city limits And I know I’m tired Might be fearing something deep inside Holed up and gone into hiding These home truths could be yours If you’ll take them If you don’t disintegrate with them [CH] These are my home truths, darling I’m afraid I’ll be alone forever Reincarnated And destined These are my home truths, darling You can’t kill this kid with kindness Not too cool to be cruel So I’ll be driving all nite In my mirror I keep seeing your reflection Moving in the wrong direction These home truths have nothing to do With me, my friend Gonna make ya see it’s for the best [CH] Every day, the message changes Signals start to fade My mind is running so it never has to face the home truths The home truths

Sing to Me 02:54
Sing to me I love your song Sing it just for me There’s a line Gets me every time I might have to steal it Sing your song to me Weave your sorcery Enslave me Sing to me Enslave me Sing to me Sing to me There’s lots of space To fill with harmony Hear the waves Inside my shell Reverberating Sing your song to me I can tell how you feel When your heart is singing Sing to me When your heart is singing I can tell how you feel When your heart is singing Sing to me

2020, pt. 2 08:00
It was 2020 She said, “I don’t know how this ends” On a barren country road “That all depends,” I said The trees are a-swayin’ Red sun versus the rain And the branches sag From the heavy weight I feel much the same way Cinematic expanses Breathe it all in On a country drive We hit the road here together To take it all in In real time Out of focus In the mist In the corner of the frame It could look just like a normal year Or any normal day Am I dreaming of this romance? Of this perfect carefree girl Or am I starring at a reflection of my life before? [CH1] Waiting for something to happen It’s in his DNA To wait it out All his life he’s stargazing A mechanism To fake them out And there’s a fire within us All consuming Engulfing us I don’t know what we are doing Like so many Tryin’ to feel my way out But there’s something I’m dying to tell you To answer all of your questions Before the year ends It was 2020 The year they flipped the switch Have to lock yourself up for days Just to get out of phase And it’s 50/50 There are no guarantees You’re your own worst enemy When you think it all comes for free A glass of champagne is shaking While soldiers march outside When this whole thing is over And the dust clears You will realize An abandoned mansion The base where we conspire The old man’s fireplace We gather ‘round the fire Running wild like a child When we finally hit the streets With the sun behind the clouds The night, our accomplice Primordial lovers In the throes of passion Our love is blind Primordial lovers They are love and hate They are born to fight [CH2] All those echo of silence ringing in my ears I realize Cascading reverberations Echo waves of fear inside And you can’t blame mother nature She came imposing her changes Before the year even began It was 2020 and before she could decide She gave me a little taste and I buried myself inside her

about

The Monster, Jeff Gay's latest album, underwent a winding journey spanning several years and locations. Beginning with leftover tracks from the previous album, additional songs emerged from various periods, including the pandemic era and a productive period during a health-related break from work. Collaborations, reworking of demos, and contributions from various musicians added depth to the evolving album. Jeff worked extensively with Charles Austin at Ocean Floor, involving multiple rounds of tracking, mixing, and feedback sessions. Notable contributions by engineers like Adam Fancy, Palmer Jamieson (Golden Palm Studio) and Jeff Macdonald (The Drum Room), musicians such as Michael Belyea, Connor Booth, and Jesse Griffith, and heavenly backing vocal performances by Meaghan Dalton and Emilee Sorrey (amongst others) enriched the recordings. Additionally, Ronok Sarkar played a pivotal role in the mixing process, and the album was mastered with ease by Francisco Lopes at Ocean Floor. Despite the album's diverse recording methods, Jeff aimed for thematic coherence, transitioning from introspective romanticism in his previous album, "Stargazer," to storytelling and exploring darker themes in "The Monster." This album represents Jeff's creative Frankenstein, shaping impressions of human nature through poetic storytelling. Or as Charles so eloquently puts it: it comes off like a post-Apocalyptic JJ Cale!
Knock it back!
